The homeland of the Joyous Roamer lies somewhere in the distant east, but it was an extremely rare sight even there, so everyone always took it to be a beast of myth. The Joyous Roamer can hibernate for twelve years straight before it awakens on the first full moon after winter's end. Its appearance is commonly viewed as an auspicious omen and a blessing. Upon awakening, it immediately gobbles up all the "jinxes" it can find. Jinxes are invisible pests that bring misfortune, so when the Joyous Roamer devours them, everyone nearby is blessed with an entire year of good luck. As a show of thanks, people will then prepare the Joyous Roamer's favorite treats: lantern oil and paraffin wax. After thoroughly enjoying these gifts, the Joyous Roamer will emit a warm glow that shines good fortune on all.
