Hero Story

In the streets and alleys of Hathor, taverns that are famous for their "games" are never hard to find. Dice clatter, cards flutter, and laughter mingles with groans beneath the flicker of lantern light. Winners buy rounds for the house, losers tell stories to make up for their luck, and the one who wins the most? They become a legend.
Lately, that legend goes by the name Kaelon.
No one knows where he came from. They only know his wavy blue hair stands out in any crowd, his earrings sway with every step, and he always walks into a tavern with that lazy, lopsided smile. He calls himself a "player," and whenever he sits at a card table, he starts spinning a ring around his finger, like victory's already in the bag.
And his playstyle? Completely unpredictable. He doesn't count cards or calculate odds. Instead, he just follows his gut and somehow, he always wins. Rumors swirl about who he really is. Some say he was trained by a hidden master, while others whisper he's cheating. But Kaelon just shrugs, flashing an innocent grin. "Guess I'm just lucky," he says.
At the Old Anchor tavern by the docks, Kaelon once won seven games in a row. The crowd carried him out on their shoulders and crowned him the "God of Games." Wanting to stay under the radar, he swapped into some worn-out clothes and pulled a wide-brimmed hat low over his eyes, slipping into the crowd at the Misty Flag tavern. But the moment he sat down, someone recognized him. People gathered around, laughing and begging to see his signature "lucky ring spin." Within days, the move spread through the whole town.
Truth be told, even Kaelon doesn't know why he wins. He just loves playing. He's never cared that much about winning or losing. And maybe that carefree attitude is what keeps him on top. Over time, it made him the stuff of tavern tales.

But even legends slip up.
One night in the notorious Dice Pit Alley, Kaelon had just won his third game when a furious opponent slammed the table. "He's cheating!"
People had seen sore losers before—no big deal. Kaelon leaned in, ready to calm him down. But as he moved, something slipped from his collar. A silver scale. It landed in the center of the table.
The tavern fell silent.
"He's a Draconis?! No wonder he keeps winning... he's using magic!"
"A Draconis, here? In a human tavern? What's he planning?!"
Tension crackled through the room. Kaelon tried to play it cool, brushing the scale into his glass with a shrug. "Just a decoration, guys. No need to panic."
But no one bought his clumsy lie. Their stares turned sharp, and Kaelon, squirming in his seat, grabbed his coat and bolted out of the tavern.

The truth? Kaelon really was a Draconis.
On Dragon Isle, a mist-shrouded land across the sea from Hathor, Kaelon was known far and wide as a master of games. He could win any match where luck played a part, but that streak of fortune never truly brought him joy.
The Draconis lived by strict rules, steeped in tradition and formality. To the elders, games of chance were shallow distractions—foolish human nonsense. And thanks to the old grudges between humans and the Draconis, anything that smacked of human culture was frowned upon.
Kaelon knew his love of games was seen as a disgrace. Maybe that's why he clung to them even harder. It has his way of pushing back against all the stiff traditions around him.
At first, his kin humored him. They joined his games out of curiosity. But the more he won, the more their curiosity turned into muttering, jealousy, disdain.
"It's just dumb luck. He has no real skill."
"He'll pay the price for chasing these human habits."
The endless whispers wore on him, like the stiff old rules that made Dragon Isle so suffocating. But what bothered Kaelon even more was how his kin seemed content to live behind dull, lifeless masks. They clung to their so-called dignity and pride, never daring to admit they might enjoy a human game, even just a little.
Kaelon didn't want to live like that. He didn't want to bury his real self under layers of rules and shame.
So one night, under a clear moon, he left. Disguised as a human, he crossed the sea to Hathor, chasing a place where he could finally breathe.
For the first time, in the chaos of human taverns, he felt truly free. Compared to the jealousy and cruelty buried beneath rules and etiquette, this loud, unfiltered honesty was far more intoxicating. He fell in love with the games, and with the glint of anticipation in every eye before they began. He didn't care how often he won. What he craved was that split-second rush, before a card hit the table or the dice left his hand.

But after the incident in Dice Pit Alley, he was forced to be careful again. He dressed down, kept his head low, stopped doing the little flourishes that made him stand out. He even talked less, just to avoid drawing attention.
Still, he couldn't help himself. Whenever a game got going, he found his way to the table. And whenever he got into it, his signature flair gave him away all over again.
Living like that—half-hidden, half-himself—wore on him. Until one ordinary night like any other, Kaelon finally snapped. He ripped off the hat that kept him hidden, strode boldly into the Seven Dice tavern, and dropped into a seat like he owned the place, that familiar smirk back on his face.
That night, he won nine straight games. The other players were in shambles. He raised his glass to toast—and a silver scale slipped from his sleeve. Once again, the air tensed. This time, though, he wasn't sure what to do.
But this time, before things could spiral, a man in a fine but simple robe stood up from the corner. He walked over calmly, picked up the scale, and looked around the room.
"I watched every game," he said, voice calm and steady. "No tricks. No magic. If you ask me, he really is just that lucky."
The room froze under his gaze, and little by little, things began to settle.
The man handed the scale back to Kaelon and added quietly, "You are lucky. But maybe you don't even know why yet."
Kaelon touched his earing, half-embarrassed. "You're right. I've never figured it out."
The man smiled, turned to go, then looked back over his shoulder with a long, knowing glance. "Maybe what you really need is to stop hiding who you are."
With that, he slipped out into the night.
Kaelon stared at the scale in his palm. And slowly, something inside him loosened. He'd left Dragon Isle to escape its chains, but here he was, still wrapping himself in new ones. Always hiding, always worrying. How was that any different from the old rules he hated?
It wasn't until someone pointed it out that he realized the chains he blamed on the world were ones he'd quietly put on himself. He chuckled under his breath. Not just at the situation, but at himself and how silly it all seemed now.
He looked up with a familiar, easy smile. Letting his disguise fall away, he walked back to the table as his true self.

From that night on, Kaelon never hid again. Dragon scales and all, he wandered from tavern to tavern across Hathor, laughing off rumors and stares, playing every game that caught his eye.
As for the man in the robe... he was sometimes seen in the distance, watching from the crowd. But he never came close again. Kaelon didn't go looking for him. He figured, when the time was right, they'd cross paths once more, somewhere under the tavern lights.
And whenever he won another round, he'd flick his earring with a smile and whisper:
"Yes... this is how I'm meant to play."
